Once upon a time there was a master tradesman who always worked by himself. He was getting on in years, and looked for trainees to pass on the rules of his trade. Over the next five years he carefully chose 40 people from all walks of life. Some were educated, some were not. Some were rich, some were poor. Some were ambitious, some are not.
Each of the 40 trainees were given the rules of the trade, written out step-by-step, and individually supervised by the master to give them the best knowledge as simple as he could. He spent long hours each day with the students, to give them his very best knowledge. He spent the same amount of time with each one.
Five years later, he sent them out into the world. The result? Only 5 out of 40 became successful in that trade.
What happened? Why were they each not a success? The answer: human nature.
Some were so egotistical that they came in thinking they are ready knew everything, thinking, “I know better than that.” Others were just plain lazy and would shortcut the sequence he had laid out for them. Some of the trainees didn’t have the patience. Others tried hard but we’re not flexible enough. Some were too rigid. But most failed because they didn’t have the same passion as the master. And without the passion, they didn’t have the self-discipline.
Each was given the rules, and had the master standing right over them for five years. But without the passion for it, they didn’t spend the time it took to improve and refine their skills. When you love something you gain strength and energy in doing it. This will attract other people with the same feelings. Birds of a feather flock together.

Human nature hasn’t changed much. It’s still about numbers. Expect this when you build a team! 🙂 (Isn’t it fortunate the master tradesman didn’t choose just 5 trainees?)
